We ordered a garlic chicken and a loco moco plate. To our surprised (because of the low ratings on here) it was 10/10. The garlic chicken had some dry parts, it could use a tad more sauce, the sauce was mainly on the bottom so it wasn't too bad. The loco moco was good. The burger was made and not those premade burgers you can buy in bulk. Their Mac was real good too (I've tasted Mac salad from places where it'd taste watered down or taste like straight Mayo) Would def come back for both items on the menu and ask for extra garlic sauce.

Picked up takeout from here and the katsu and mochiko chicken were good, but the chili was way too salty. Ordering and pick up was easy and there were no issues. We didn't eat there, but inside was clean and there was a good amount of seats.

I had an appointment in Kalihi and had some time to kill. It was one of those hectic days and hadn't eaten lunch. It was 7pm. It's officially dinner time. I pulled into the parkin lot just past the Jack in the Box by Umi street. There used to be an Elena's there. There must be somewhere I can get a takeout.... My hunch was right. There was a Chinese restaurant on the right and Subway on the left. Subway was closed, and I didn't want to get ala carte, so I went to BBQ Mix, which was right in the middle. It's only 7:15 but it's really quiet in there. I walk up to the counter where I was greeted by a cheerful young lady. I decided to try the hamburger steak. I seated myself on the chair after ordering and I was glad I wasn't earning in... The chairs they had were wrought iron and hardwood and let me tell you, if you had told me that it was a medieval torchering device, I would have believed! This was the most uncomfortable piece of furniture my butt ever laid on! I was glad my order came up relatively quickly, as I was up and out the door. "Thank you, have a nice day!" she says, so I replied with a " You too!" I like that kind of employee-customer interaction. While waiting for my appointment, I pick on the plate. There's 2 scoops of rice, mac salad and 3 hamburger patties with brown gravy. The patties look handmade, not store bought. More points there. They are well seasoned and tasty. Very moist and tender. Macaroni for the salad wasn't overcooked, nor was it al dente, but pleasantly done. Slivers of carrots not only add color but give a bit of texture to the mac salad. The one thing that I thought might have been a mismatch was the jasmine rice. Jasmine rice does so well with ethnic dishes, but for me, it interfered with the subtle flavor of the brown gravy. Otherwise, it's a flawless plate lunch, but that's just my opinion. Later on though, I started to get that reaction... I don't know if it was in the patties or the gravy, but there probably were traces of MSG. I normally would've minused a star, but the value of the meal and the bubbly personality of the girl at the counter certainly is worth the high mark.

Hubby, daughter and I came here for lunch. It was our first time trying it out. We used to drive by here all the time but never tried it until today. As we walked in, we ordered and then sat at a table. The soda machine fountain wasn't working so the lady didn't charge for the combo hubby had with a drink. I decided to get the Arizona green iced tea which is always my favorite when restaurants only have canned drinks. For my entree, I got the chicken fried noodle. This was so much for a plate of fried noodles. Plenty of pieces of chicken and this was filling. I managed to finish the whole plate. I drank my Arizona green iced tea. So refreshing. The nice lady brings your food over to you. There's no table service so you basically toss your container in the trash. They recycle the cans since I saw the cans above the trash. My food was delicious and filling but a tad greasy. Not bad overall. I would come back to try other items on their menu.

Let me tell you that this is a hidden gem in Kalihi and you should check them out. We dropped out for service at Nissan and walked to find a place for breakfast. I thought this place only serves lunch plates but we went in because it allowed you to eat inside. The menu is extensive! I ordered the breakfast plate and it came with rice meat ( two slices of bacon, two links and two Portuguese sausage-that aaa already a lot of food. We ordered a side of pancakes which the lady warned us they were huge (yes they were!!). I opted for the French toast and it was yummy. Pancake was homemade and they served it with Aunt Jemima syrup! Who uses this expensive syrup??? This place does!! Serving is huge so come hungry!!

Formally another restaurant that was just ok when I last went, after seeing Nadine's post, I found that they just opened, and is a different restaurant from the last time I tried there. This place located in a complex next to jack in the box, with Hong nien, DLS and subway will now be my go to place when I'm in the area. Teriyaki plate- 4 stars - for $11.50, I got 3 large pieces of Teri beef and a heapful of soft white rice and Mac salad, although a little too much mayo for me, had taste to my liking (I usually can't taste mac salads from other places and tend to discard them). Chicken katsu - 4 stars - two slabs of cut chicken katsu. The sauce was more sweet sour sauce than the japanese katsu type, but was still good with the katsu. I didn't try the mixed plate and bbq burger, but my sons liked it. I gave this place a 5 star overall bc service was great, available parking, and the heavy lunch plates were both great in quantity and quality for the cheap price I paid. However, it's a bit hard to drive out from the parking lot because of all the cars parked on the street, limiting my view.

Support new local businesses! BBQ Mixed caught my attention because they had no Instagram page and no Yelp reviews. Curious, I drove to Kalihi to investigate... Here are my findings: 1. Free shared parking with Diagnostic Lab, Subway, and State Farm Insurance. 2. Located in the strip mall next to Jack In The Box 3. This new business opened last month (February 2021). The interior is clean, modern, and spacious! 4. The owners are from China. They learned English when they moved here! Service is attentive and efficient! 5. Hours of operation are 6am to 9pm daily (may close at 8:30pm on weekends) FOOD: since it was "Fish Friday", I got: *Mini Garlic Shrimp plate - five lightly battered shrimp. I was able to eat the shells! *Mini Garlic Ahi plate - a bit dry, but tasty *Mini Garlic Fish Filet plate - moist and tender! *Hamachi Kama - smokey with crisp skin and subtle miso flavor! My favorite! Note: each plate comes with rice and macaroni salad. -I also liked the accompanying lemon wedges and tartar sauce! -Drink refills are 50 Cents. I admire hard work, ambition, and entrepreneurial spirit! BBQ Mixed is an example of making dreams a reality. I will continue to support them and go back soon for the Happy Hour Steak Special and Daily Specials! Welcome to Kalihi, BBQ Mixed! Best wishes on your new venture! Thank you for your thoughtful gesture of opening the door for me since my two hands were full!
